The Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State, has dismissed five members of staff following allegations of sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion and related misconduct.

The decision was reached at the council’s 122nd meeting held on June 12, according to a statement issued on Sunday in Awka by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Harrison Madubueze.

Those affected include Prof. C.C. Nwabachili, immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Prof. Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Others are Dr I.H. Iheukwumere and Mr Emeka Nwabunnia, both from the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus. Also dismissed is Mrs Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar who served as Examination Officer in the Faculty of Law’s examinations unit at the time of the alleged incidents.

The university stated that the affected staff were found responsible for offences ranging from sexual misconduct to intimidation, extortion and other ethical breaches.

Dr Madubueze said the council reviewed the cases and approved the dismissals in line with its disciplinary procedures.

He added that the institution would continue to enforce standards of conduct expected of staff, noting that actions capable of damaging the university’s reputation would not be tolerated.
