The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has named former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made on Monday in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to the ADC, Amaechi emerged after consultations involving party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from across the country’s geopolitical zones.
The party said the decision was influenced by Amaechi’s performance in the ADC presidential primary, where he finished as runner-up, as well as his experience in public service.
Abdullahi described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a combination of two experienced political figures with national reach and governance experience.
“Amaechi brings one of the most extensive public service records in contemporary Nigerian politics,” the statement said.
The ADC highlighted Amaechi’s political career, which includes serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation. The party said his experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government would strengthen its campaign ahead of the 2027 election.
The party also said Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South and other parts of Southern Nigeria would complement Atiku’s candidacy and help broaden the party’s appeal nationwide.
The ADC described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a national platform aimed at addressing challenges related to the economy, security, job creation, and national unity.
With the announcement, the party has formally unveiled its presidential ticket for the 2027 election as it seeks to challenge for power at the federal level.
