The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that two people were killed during Friday’s attack on two schools in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The confirmation follows earlier reports of the assault on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and Community Grammar School/LA Primary School, Esiele, in the Ogbomoso area, where several students and staff members were abducted by armed men.

In a statement, the police spokesperson in the state, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the victims killed during the attack were an assistant headmaster identified as Adesiyan and a commercial motorcyclist.

Olayinka said the motorcyclist was shot dead after allegedly resisting attempts by the attackers to take his motorcycle.

The police also confirmed that Alamu Folawe, vice-principal of Community Grammar School, was among those abducted.

According to the command, no pupil or student had been confirmed dead as of the time of filing this report.

The attackers were also said to have taken away the vice-principal’s Toyota Corolla vehicle before setting it ablaze along a road leading into the forest.

Olayinka said the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji, visited the affected communities alongside other security commanders for an on-the-spot assessment and operational briefing.

He added that tactical teams and intelligence units had been deployed to the area to support rescue efforts and track down the gunmen.

“The command urges residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist ongoing operations,” the police spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the Oyo Global Forum (OGF) condemned the attack, describing it as evidence of rising insecurity in the south-west region.

The group, in a statement signed by its chairman, Taiwo Adebayo, said community sources alleged that over 30 gunmen dressed in military uniforms carried out the operation.

OGF also claimed the abducted victims were moved into the Old Oyo National Park and called for stronger security operations across forest corridors linking Oyo, Kwara and Niger states.
